SHUTING QIU

Shuting Qiu graduated with an MA and BA in Fashion from the acclaimed Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Her eponymous brand, SHUTING QIU was established in 2018, putting forward a signature sense of femininity that features a “modern romantic” woman—a woman who is powerful and independent while maintaining her soft and romantic identity.

The SHUTING QIU woman dares to express herself with asymmetry and experimentation in silhouette, often rendered in rich contrasting colors of silk jacquards, intricate embroidery, and floral prints. SHUTING QIU is recognized by the unique use of bright, “happy” colors and prints, juxtaposed in an unfamiliar yet beautiful way.

Shuting draws inspiration from travel, film, art, and literature. The MA graduate collection, entitled “I am Rooted, but I Flow”, pays homage to Virginia Woolf as an expression of Shuting as a “writer-designer” who relies on visuals—as if they were words—to deliver emotion. She says, “If I were not a designer, a writer would be my dream”. Inspired by the persona of Virginia Woolf and her trip to Mumbai, she references the English style, combining masculine tartan fabrics with rich floral prints.

By using recycled materials to create luxury, she wanted to convey an ethos that she imagines Virginia Woolf to have put forth. It came about in the way she executed her collection with a conscious awareness of sustainability and care for the environmental impact of fashion. She ultimately presents through the MA collection, a free and heroic, romantic and neurotic ‘writer’.

Shuting has garnered many highlights from prominent media in the likes of Harper’s Bazaar China, Marie Claire, and ELLE België, noted as among the promising young designers to watch. She is the winner of VFiles Runway 10, where her brand made runway debut at New York Fashion Week in Spring 2019. She is a finalist for the inaugural BoF China Prize 2019, and most recently, the winner of the Special Prize from the BIG Design Award, Japan.

Currently based in Antwerp, Belgium, the Chinese-born designer is set to show at Milan Fashion Week in Spring 2020. The A/W19 collection will be available online and offline through Brownsfashion, Joyce HK, and SKP Beijing.

La femme SHUTING QIU ose s’exprimer au travers de coupes asymétriques. Sa silhouette expérimentale est souvent présentée à travers de riches contrastes de couleurs, des jacquards de soie, des broderies complexes et des imprimés fleuris.

Shuting puise son inspiration dans ses voyages, le 7ème art, la littérature et de l’art de manière plus générale.

Sa collection de fin d’études intitulée « I am Rooted but I Flow » rend hommage à Virginia Woolf.

Dans sa collection elle présente un écrivain libre, héroïque, romantique et à la fois névrosé.

Shuting designer, se rêve aussi écrivain. Elle s’appuie sur des visuels – comme s’ils étaient des mots – afin de délivrer de véritables émotions. Elle-même dira « Si je n’étais pas créatrice, être écrivain serait mon rêve ».

Inspirée par Virginia Woolf ainsi que par son voyage à Mumbai, elle fait référence au style Anglais, en combinant des tartans masculins avec des imprimés fleuris très riches.

Soucieuse de l’Environnement, sensible au développement durable, Shuting Qiu tilise des matières recyclées pour créer du luxe. Elle souhaite transmettre en cela les idéaux prônés par Virginia Woolf…

Shuting a retenu l’attention de nombreux medias tels que Harper’s Bazaar China, Marie Claire, and ELLE Belgium, c’est l’une des jeunes créatrices à suivre. Elle a remporté le VFILES Runway 10, défilé lors duquel elle a pu faire ses débuts sur la scène internationale durant la Fashion Week de New York. Elle est également finaliste du BoF China Prize 2019, et plus récemment, gagnante du Special Prize du BIG Design Award au Japon.

Actuellement basée à Anvers, Belgique, la designer Chinoise est sélectionnée pour présenter sa collection SS20 lors de la Fashion Week de Milan. La collection A/W19 sera disponible chez Browns, Joyce HK et SKP Beijing.
